Catch The PLANE & get INSANE
July 7th, 2018Right after Independence Day, my two friends from Camp and I decided to spend our Day-Off In New York City.
We worked in Kent, a small town in Connecticut, so we were only 140 kilometers from New York.
Scheduled train departure: 8:31To get from Kent to Dover, we had to leave after 7 to still have time to buy a ticket at the Harlem Valley-Wingdale station, from there it was a quick train ride to Grand Central and at 10:35 we were breathing the New York air.
Since we didn't have much time for a breakfast and we had a whole day of adventures ahead of us, we decided to find a place to eat first.
Around 11:20 we managed to find something without queues.
We sat down at the Food Market in Manhattan and ate a delicious Panini with bacon
(I wasn't a vegetarian back then 😄).
From there we walked to the station, took the 12:15 subway, and went straight to Brooklyn Hall.
We took a walk across the famous Brooklyn Bridge and at 1:30 p.m. we were already in Brooklyn.
Right after leaving the bridge, we noticed an interesting cafe, so we decided to try Boston coffee at "Brooklyn Bridge Restaurant & Cafe".
It ended up that only one of us actually tried this coffee, the other friend enjoyed the Chardonnay, and I had a strawberry cocktail to cool down.
After entering the cafe, we saw a typical American cart with hot dogs and pretzels on the sidewalk!
We each took one pretzel, it tasted like a piece of paper...
We were in a rush, it was already 2:10 p.m., and we hadn't visited anything big yet, so we headed towards the port via Brooklyn Bridge Park.
At 3:20 p.m. we bought tickets for the ship to get from Brooklyn to Wall Street,
it was the fastest way.
Even though we had to wait a while, we were finally out by 3:45 p.m!
The journey was really short because 5 minutes later we were already on Wall Street.
We walked a few steps to get to Port P-16, where we could purchase tickets for the cruise around the Statue of Liberty, which cost $31.
While waiting in line to buy a ticket, a stranger woman turned towards us, holding 3 tickets in her hand for the cruise we wanted to buy.
She looked at us, at the tickets in her hand, and then returned her gaze to us.
She extended her hand towards us, smiled and said, "It's your lucky day" and then disappeared into the crowd without a word.
It was clear that she was in the rush.
We stood there for a while, each with a ticket in a hand, trying to process what had just happened.
We were called by the sound of the ship, which suggested that it was time to board.
We quickly ran to the boarding place and took our seats.
At 4:20 p.m. we were ready for our happy hour cruise.
During the cruise we saw:
🗽 Colgate headquarters
🗽 Ellis Island - an island belonging mostly to the state of New Jersey and partly to New York
🗽 Jersey City
🗽 Manhattan from the most famous perspective shown in films, postcards, photos, etc.
And of course the main attraction, the Statue of Liberty, which in reality does not seem as big as on the big screen.
At 5:40 p.m., after the cruise, we were walking along Wall Street.
The skyscrapers there are so tall that even in the middle of the day the streets are as dark as in the early evening.
We saw the world's largest Stock Exchange.
Business Center - the district of businessmen and business in general.
Charging Bull - a Wall Street bull that symbolizes the strength and power of the American government, but also, according to legend, brings financial success to anyone who touches its genitals.
Later, wandering the streets of Manhattan, overwhelmed by all the impressions and events, we realized that it was time to get ready for the return train!
So we took the subway to Grand Central, where we had a return train at 8:10 p.m. to Harlem Valley-Wingdale, where we were at 9:26 p.m.
